Early in the morning you will leave Cusco on our bus and travel to Huancarani where we will have breakfast (not included). Then we will continue visiting the funerary tower of Ninamarca. Then we will continue to Paucartambo. Here, we will have a small city tour to discover this charming colonial town, famous for its folkloric traditions.
Once in Acjanaco (3560 m), the entrance to the Manu National Park, our guide will explain everything about the Reserve, including rules and characteristics. From this point, we will begin to descend through the Cloud Forest, an incredible ecosystem where we will admire many orchids, heliconias, and primitive ferns.
In addition, we will observe various types of birds such as the variable hawk, many types of flycatchers, crested orioles and, with luck, monkeys, the Amazonian umbrella bird and some quetzals. On the way we will also make a stop to observe the beautiful Gallito de las Rocas, the national bird of Peru. We will spend our first night at the Bamboo Lodge.
After our very early breakfast we are continuing on our bus passing by Pillcopata (527m/1729ft) and later arriving to the Atalaya port (500masl/1640ft) set on the Alto Madre de Dios river banks, from here we are boating down the stream to get the chance to enjoy the high diversity on birds species like egrets, vultures, cormorants and visiting the Machuhuasi Amazonian pond with a great opportunity to see the “shansho” or Hoatzin and more different birds, afterwards we are back to our boat downstream to visit the Hotspring to enjoy our lunch here and afrterwards going by boat to navigate until our accommodations at the Dorado Lodge (300masl/986ft), during the boating we can enjoy our lunch on board.
We have the chance to visit the platform of observation at the mammals claylick area, arriving after a hike along the trail system from the lodge which is located in the beginning of the lowland rainforest Overnight at the accommodations: Dorado Lodge (300masl/986ft).
With the first light of the day, we start travelling by boat heading to the Manu national Park getting in just after the confluence of the Alto Madre de Dios and Manu rivers, we will briefly stop at the Limonal ranger station (310masl/1017ft) to sign the guest book for the Reserve Zone.
Back to our boat will be go up stream of the Manu River and at the same time enjoying our breakfast leaving behind us the western facilities to go into the touristic area for around 5 hours until Salvador oxbowlake where we will be the following two nights at the Casa Machiguenga.
During the boating we can enjoy our lunch and at the same time a great variety of birds like macaws, egrets, spoonbills and good chances to see capibaras, caimans, turtles, monkeys eating from the tres in the surroundings, and with more luck a wild cat sunbathing along the beaches. After arriving we can go for a hike exploring the wildlife along the very large trail system in this pristine rainforest Overnight at the accommodations: Casa Machiguenga (370masl/1213ft).
After breakfast we will spend the morning at Cocha Salvador Lake. You'll spend part of your time canoeing across the lake using a catamaran to observe animal life from the water. We may come across an Agami heron or a Sungrebe and the brown capuchin monkeys usually feed on nearby fruits.
The specially built docks that jut out into the lake allow us to search for a family of giant otters that live here. These, the world's largest freshwater carnivores, remain common only on Manu, having been hunted to extinction throughout most of their former range.
Each animal consumes between 4 and 5 kilos of fish a day and can often be seen eating large fish on logs at the lake shore. The rest of the day will be spent walking the trails in the area in search of some of the 13 species of monkeys found in the forest here.
Your guide will explain some of the basics of rainforest ecosystems and point out some of the area's medicinal plants used by local indigenous groups. It is possible that we come across a group of peccaries, a species of wild boar that is found here. During the afternoon we enjoyed the sunset. Night at Casa Matsiguenka.
Very early in the morning, the group will visit the macaw clay lick located in the Salvadorcillo Creek, then the last lookout post of the Manu National Park will continue to Pakitza by boat - Pakitza and explore the forest observing different species of plants and birds and with luck, more animals. Then, we will return to our lodge. Optional night walk.
Today we have one more opportunity to explore the forest around the lodge; we might even get a chance to see a group of Tamarine monkeys, which are the smallest monkeys in the entire world. Be careful of the surroundings, because they could sneak up behind you! We will also visit to the lake of Cocha Otorongo, where a 20-meter observation tower in the rainforest canopy overlooking the lake is available for observing wildlife.
Later, after lunch, we will take the boat and travel for four hours down the Manu River to our lodge, on the way we might see some black caimans lying on the beach receiving the heat from the sun, maybe we can see the great, South American feline, the jaguar, which may be basking in the sun somewhere along the river. In the evening, we will visit another trail system with a completely different set of features than the first.
Once again, we got up early, enjoyed walking around the lodge and then packed up and slowly made our way up the river. We continue to our next lodge, to get there, we will make a stop at a beautiful hot springs place, where we will spend some time relaxing and swimming. Located a short distance from the Alto Madre de Dios River. from here we continue to Puerto Atalaya, where we will take a car and drive for 40 minutes to Bamboo Lodge and spend one more night in this magical Amazon jungle.
Today we will leave our wonderful forest full of mysteries and return by bus to Cusco. We have breakfast and then continue through the cloud forest, with a few more bird-watching opportunities. Then we travel back to the Andes to return to Cusco in the afternoon.
